backhoe.jpgFriday morning was spent, all three kids and I, at our lot. It was dig day!

We have always been explaining, here and there, to the boys about our new house that we will build. Believe me, it has been a long time coming.  Especially with the selling of our old house and moving to this apartment. They have been dealing with the whole ordeal rather well (unlike me, who gets angry and stressed out). They would talk about it and ask questions, and discuss how people move and other people live in their old house. We’ve also taken them several times out to the model of our house. Being phsycially in the house that is just like ours will be is somewhat outside their realm of understanding, but they liked to play and see everything. So, they were very excited to see some actual happenings on our lot… this means progress on our house. Before, it was such an abstract concept for 3 and 5 year olds. But now, there it is! A big hole in the ground… where the basement will be. Something they can understand.

digging.jpgI myself am excited to see some actual happenings at the lot, too. For me, I think the concept of building our brand new house was also sort of abstract. But now that I can physically see something going on, it seems truly real. I think at night about where my furniture will go, what color I’d like to paint the boys’ room, where the baby will sleep and my kitchen counters (which will be Zodiaq, in Cappuccino, instead of granite, I’m super-excited about these). I plan on taking the kids out at least once a week to see what’s going on. This will be especially exciting once walls start to go up.

As a matter of fact, I’m going to drive out to the lot this afternoon and see if they’re starting work on the footings. I don’t know what that is, but it has something to do with cement and the big hole in the ground.
