Our house was finished in April and we moved in. A little while later, we started smelling this mildew-type smell in the boys’ closet. We thought it was just something wet in their hamper, but it turned out not to be; the smell got stronger. The smell got so strong that you could smell when you came up the stairs. The smell got so strong, we moved the boys out into other rooms and put a towel in front of their bedroom door.
The house people came out and smelled the smell and ripped up the closet wall and found nothing. They did leak tests outside, they crawled up in the attic to check for moisture and still nothing was causing that smell… which they definitely thought was mold. Someone came to do air quality tests and they all came back normal.
Here were are, 5 months later and their closet is still ripped up. There were two guys out here just last week – the drywall supplier and someone else – checking it out. Someone took more samples of wallboard and insulation a couple of weeks ago. I don’t have any more information right now on that.
Well, last week, Tim noticed a black-ish spot in the hardwood floor behind the pedestal sink in the powder room. It was also damp. He thought the kids were being messy in the sink while washing their hands, so he put a fan in there to dry out the floor. Upon closer inspection over the past couple of days, it appears that there is a leak in the wall. And it is ruining the hardwood floor. Of course it is Saturday. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but it looks like this is going to be another mess, with ripped up walls and now floors.
I love this house and am glad we built it, but sheesh, do things like this really need to happen? We’d just like to go on with our lives with a minor snag here or there, but these problems are too big and too stressful and too tenacious! I’d just like to get back to my wash and the stain on the carpet, thank you very much.

Ok, that’s a bunch of crap in a brand new house like that! I’ve heard about people having more problems sometimes with new houses than you do with old ones. I hope it gets fixed and it’s not a major inconvenience! Don’t wanna mess around with mold and mildew!
